  2. Hi, I'm new to embroidery and discovered your videos on YouTube. They are a fantastic tool to help get started. The stitches can seem really daunting but you manage to show them and explain them in such a clear and concise way that I've managed to get started with a bit more confidence. I particularly love all the tips as you go along too. So thank you for helping me fall in love with hand embroidery. P.S. I adore your cat popping in to say hello too!

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind comments Emma, I'm glad you are enjoying learning embroidery and are finding the videos helpful! Keep watching, more on the way! x

  4. I just want to thank you for your wonderful resource which i found by chance on You Tube. I am looking after my husband who is in the first stages of dementia and other related health problems and during lockdown I took an online course in exploring textiles through TextileArtists.com which introduced me to the joys of online learning. Having grown in confidence, I have explored embroidery as an extension of the simple stitches I learned and have been overwhelmed by the number of channels I found. I( was fortunate to have a short respite break recently and visited the Great Tapestry of Scotland which has given me even more incentive to embroider.) Your channel has been the most consistent and as it also give me the chance to buy resources as well, it has saved me a lot of heartache trying to get good quality products to enable me to practice this new skill. In particular fabric. So thank you. As a cat lover, the bonus is seeing the wonderful connection you have with your cats and although I am no longer a cat owner myself, I can so relate to the way they place themselves right in the middle of your work time and space. It makes me chuckle. I am also so appreciative of your free designs, which together with your very clear tutorials are helping me to begin to master stitches. I just wanted you to know how much this free content is appreciated and I hope that in the future I shall be able to support you even more. Kind regards Barbara

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind words Barbara, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel and resources we have and have discovered something to help you through difficult times. The pandemic has opened up a whole new world of learning online so it's good to know something good has come out of all this. Lots more content to come, so do keep watching and if you can give the videos a thumbs up that will help other people to see them also! x

  5. I discovered your videos and for the last 3 days and have been immersed in them. Just starting out as I have never done this before. At 70, and a beginner, never too old to learn a new skill. Thank you very much. Your videos are wonderful and I love when your kitty gets in the shots. I also had a ginger kitty I rescued at 2 weeks old and kept. Thank you again. Your videos are truly inspirational.

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind feedback, definitely never to late to learn a new skill Dory! Do check out my beginners Embroidery page on the website if you haven't seen it, lots of useful information and videos to get you started, you can see it here:

  6. I found your YouTube videos about a month ago when looking for instructions for a embroidery boarder and your account was in my recommended listing, been watching many of your older videos and been enjoying them a lot.
I have been embroidering for over 40 years and it’s funny how after all these years I still find something new to learn every time lol
I love your calm approach when demonstrating in your videos and all without that loud music in the background, looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    Sarah says:
Thank you Angela, glad you found me and are enjoying the videos! It's the same for me too, thank goodness wi we will never run out of things to learn, then what would we do! I've just discovered magic paper...(video coming!)

  7. I really enjoy watching your video/tutorials. I enjoy seeing your work and learning something new each time I watch.
I notice you don't appear to use a thimble. I need to use a thimble but find it extremely awkward. Is there a technique to using or growing accustomed to using a thimble? My fingertip would appreciate the help.

    Sarah says:
I don't use one Michelle for the same reason as you so I'm not the right person to ask! You can buy leather ones which are more flexible and sometimes if I'm doing something fine and the needle keeps sticking in me, I just put a sticking plaster on...

  9. Sarah, I am inspired with your videos. I love the way you give instructions so much that they make me feel I could be capable of embroidering as beautifully as you do. I follow you almost every day.

I wanted to ask you, how do you paint your fabric? There is a video where you show a sample and it looks great, But do not show how to do it. Do you think you could make a video to show how did you paint your fabrics. I would appreciate it very very much.

    Sincerely,
    Soledad Luciano

    Sarah says:
There is a video coming up on how to paint backgrounds Soledad, but there is one here I did with my sister Caroline which you might enjoy!

  10. You are a delight Mz Sarah.. I enjoy you very much. You are also an excellent teacher. I like that your videos include the cat. I am pleased with my stitches when I first start a project and then about half way I make some irreversable mistake that is quite discouraging. I will not quit. So I really am grateful for what your videos show, your calm voice that is not rushed, the ability to stop and rewind and start again and again. I really like to embroider and wish I didn't have any other task keeping me from it.

    Sarah says:
I wish I didn't have other tasks to keep my from stitching too Iva! Glad you are enjoying the videos, thank you for watching and supporting our channel

  11. Dearest Sarah,
I just wanted to tell you Thank you for helping me to find the desire to start embroidery once again. I actually started embroidery back when I was 10 or 11 years old. Seems I always had a hoop in my hand until I was about 14. Then other things got in the way, as it usually does for a teenager. Back then I think I only knew 3 or so stitches. Well now here I am a few days before 56th birthday and finding that Im really falling in love with embroidery. Thank You again !

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind words Jen, I'm glad I'm able to help you rediscover your love of embroidery!

  14. I am so enjoying your tutorials. I embroidered with my grandmother as a child, but concentrated primarily on cross-stitch when it became very popular in the 80's. Now I have great niece and Id like to embroider them an heirloom pedigree chart. Your tutorials are helping me remember so many of the stitches my grandmother showed me in the early 60's. Thank you for sharing your talent so beautifully. Sincerely, Marcia R. Sasser

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind commets Marcia, I'm glad the videos are helping to jog your memory and remember your grandmother also at the same time. In my own small way, like your grandmother, I'm doing what I can to make sure these skills are passed on to future generations! Thank you for watching and supporting our channel by doing so.

  17. Hi Sarah (and members), I found your website when I was searching for something else (as you do 😁) , and I stopped searching to look at one, then two, then three, of your hand embroidery teaching videos. Pretty soon, I was thinking maybe I CAN do more embroidery, other than the blanket stitch I use on my appliqued quilt blocks.
Ive tried hand embroidery before, without a lot of success, but I would like to have another go at it. Just something small-ish to begin with.
I found your videos very easy to follow, and I like the embroidery tips you also offer. I am yet to check out your entire website, but have already found the free teapot design, which I think I'll make my first project.
    Thank you for your inspiration!
    Cheers

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind feedback Myra; If you have already mastered blanket stitch then you have all the skills you need to do more embroidery! Most of the free designs have accompanying videos and do check out the beginner's embroidery page on our website for lots of useful information and reminders!

I love your videos! Your voice is so soothing and you give such clear instructions- it's like being taught by a very patient friend. I turned to embroidery to calm anxiety and it's been doing wonders, but I almost chucked it before I even started because other videos I watched had terrible music, bad sound, vague instructions...then I happened on your channel.
Thank you so very much- for sharing your talent with such quality and care.

Thank you Tanya and I'm glad you didn't give up! I think you might like the video on Mindful embroidery, do check it out! x

  24. Good morning,

I have very little experience and want to add lettering to a finished baby quilt. My sister made a beautiful quilt for my daughter when she was born. 30 years later, my daughter just had a baby and I want to add her daughters name and birthday to the existing lettering on the quilt. Could you suggest a stitch that wouldn't show on the back of the blanket. (please refer to a video, if you so happen to have one)
    Thanks so much!

    Nora

    Sarah says:
You can work many stitches so they don't show Nora, use a running method rather than an up and down through the fabric method. I explain it in this video here:
    https://youtu.be/rPR5rAGEIOc
Jump forward to 14 minutes 20 seconds
If you use this method you can then choose which stitch you would like to do

  26. Hallo Sarah:
I saw your videos about Stem Stitch and French Knot.
I have doubts in stitching the stem stitch and the French knot. I bought Introduction to Jacobean Crewelwork from RSN.

    STEM STITCH;
How do I know where to put the loop, to the right or to the left hand side, so that the twisted rope effect looks the same in one line segment as in the other. I saw that Deborah Wilding always holds the loop to the side of the motif. Is this correct?
    FRENCH KNOT:
I can understand how to stitch it but some of my French knots don’t look perfect as they should , they tend to sag to one side and sometimes I have to put a little stitch in the other side of the knot so that it looks straight. I TENSION THE TGREAD EHILE I’m stitching it. Some look perfect but others don’t. What am I doing wrong?

    Sarah says:

In stem stitch, the loop goes to the right if you are working upwards along your stitching line (if you are working from left to right it the loop goes downwards). Outline stitch is the opposite. Check out this video here:
    https://youtu.be/BZ62d5j4bXQ
We also have a free download at the bottom of this page explaining the difference:
    https://www.sarahhomfray.com/free-stuff.html

We had a good video about French knots, but it got corrupted on YouTube so we will make another one but they are also in this video here:
    https://youtu.be/Hq3_WQ9J8YI

How many times are you wrapping your knot? Try just once, and if you want a bigger knot then use a thicker thread

    Thank you once again.

  29. Hello,
I am in Wexford Ireland, but born in London, l used to design and sell knitwear, so l am a knitter first....my mum won a scholarship to go to a trade school in London when she was young around 1937 and it was for embroidery, however, she spent her work life as a machinist in a factory to earn a wage as they did then in London..l never saw her do a piece of embroidery , how sad is that.
But since l retired, l have taken it up and l won first prize for my own design of a cottage scene at our local craft fare ( l had originally done it for my husband because he loves everything l do, bless)..l wish l could have shown my mum.
Anyhow, that's me and so far all the things l have looked at of yours l have loved, and my technique is improving because of your video explanations...thank you Sarah

    Sarah says:
That's a moving story Susan, thank you for sharing. Your mums love for embroidery obviously passed to you and it sounds like you are doing her proud with your stitching! We are lucky to have opportunities now that other generations didn't, and it's wonderful to see so many people of all ages embroidering professionally and for a hobby. I'm glad you are enjoying the vidoes, thank you for watching and supporting us.

  30. Hello Sarah,

I've discovered you through your YouTube channel. Your videos inspired me to start needlework again. Also through your videos, I found that I was taught incorrectly certain stitches; for example, French knots vs Colonial knots. Please keep making videos and sharing your knowledge. You inspire and help so many people.

Also, can you put together a beginner's beading kit to go with your beading embroidery video, please? I would love to stitch along with those videos.

    You are AWESOME, Sarah!
    Much thanks and love,
    Angi from the USA

    Sarah says:
Thank you for your kind feedback Angi, It's wonderful to hear you have been inspired to stitch again! We have lots more videos planned but have just had a little break as last year was a bit full on; we are actually reducing the number of kits we make so that we can do more videos! There just aren't enough hours in a day...

You have some wonderful bead shops in the US so see if there is one local to you , have fun choosing some colours you like (I suggest seed beads about size 8 or 10), grab some floss and get stitching along!

    Sarah says:

Glad that arrived promptly Anna and that you like your linens, enjoy working on them! We don't generally have any bigger pieces but if there is a particular colour you want then email me through the contact page on the website and I will see what I can do for you.

    Sarah says:
Glad you have returned to your embroidery after a hiatus Kristen, and I'm happy the videos are helping! I don't know of suppliers in the US I'm afraid, I suggest your local needlepoint store might be a good place to start or join a facebook group such as Needlepoint Nation, they will definitely have people who know!

I just wanted to pop in and wish you, Jon, Ging and Pinkie a very peaceful Christmas and a Healthy, Happy 2022.

I can't even begin to imagine the amount of hours you must put in developing your business - but it will be a lot, of that I am sure. It is very much appreciated Sarah, and you've helped me, and I'm sure many others with your advice.

I sometimes miss your tutorials, and watching you stitch, but I also realise you couldn't go on doing just that forever.

Nearly time to put your feet up and have a good rest.

    Love
    Sally

    Sarah Says:
Thank you Sally for your kind wishes, we apprecaite it! We are looking forward to putting our feet up for a bit yes (and the cats are looking forward to some laps to sit on!) but we will be back next year with more stitching and other embroidery related stuff!

  34. Hello Sarah, is it possible to send you photographs of work inspired by you? The lovely blue butterfly was, when finished, purloined very quickly by a friend. She's had a rough time, so if it gives her something to smile about, then she's more than welcome to it. I hope it helps her to know she's cared about.

So, I have taken a copy of the butterfly diagram by trading it and am doing it in goldwork. It's to become a brooch. Also, I have 2 other projects inspired by your work and thought you might like to see the results of my interpretations.

Thank you very much for all the hard work that you, Jonathon and all the team do. Our 4 cats like to see Me Ginger Cat and Punky when they put in an appearance. Believe me, I know the joys of having feline 'help'!

    Sarah says:

  59. I have just received my Versatile Table Clamp. Ordered Wednesday evening, delivered Friday morning. Great service. I am thrilled with it and, having already played around with it, it does exactly what I hoped. This will take my interest in embroidery to the next level. My only query. Why did I take so long to treat myself? This is surely a necessity!

Many thanks for a great service.

So at 60 I re-start my journey and am so looking forward to it. Let's hope I haven,t completely forgotten my basic skill level. 74. Hello Sarah!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching you youtube video on handling different embroidery threads.
Can you steer me to a tutorial or something else where I can learn about how and why to use different type embroidery threads. When I was younger I always used DMC cotton embroidery floss, but today I was watching a youtube video where the person was using Perle thread.
Are there different reasons for using the different type threads?
Thank you so much for your help. I'm just now picking this back up since all my children are grown. So I'm anxious to learn:).

    Thank you again!
    From Fort Worth, Texas

    Susan Irving

    Sarah says:
This subject is rather extensive to cover in one message Susan! My area of expertise is English embroidery only and I had to study for 3 years full time to learn all about it but yes you are right, certain techniques require certain threads. The US has many more exciting threads available that we have here in the UK and I think someone Stateside would be in a better position to tell you about these; there are lots of needlepoint shops full of experienced stitchers who I'm sure would be happy to tell you all about the many lovely fibres!

Perhaps I will do some videos on threads used in English embrodiery techniques Susan (subscribe to get the latest videos!) but in the meantime, I suggest just having a go with them will teach you alot. Generally you need a larger weave fabric and needle for a thicker thread, but just have a play and see what works and what doesn't. Perhaps you can find some local classes? This is always the best way to learn.
Don't forget to check out our upcoming distance learning classes too!
Great that you are finding time to get back to stitching again...

  83. I am new to Goldwork but am loving every single frustrating minute (how on earth do you thread a needle that is so small I can't even see which end has the hole in it!). I hope, one day, to have produced something good enough for the gallery but, in the meantime, thanks to Sarah for her kindness over the 'Pricker' problem and for the inspiration I get from her wonderful work.

    Sarah says:
No Problem Susan, happy to help if I can. Use a bigger needle until you get used to threading it then you can change to a smaller needle when you are ready!

It goes on weight and destination, so it depends on what you buy and where it is to be sent (I ship world wide, with the option of recorded delivery in the UK) but all postage and packing prices are displayed in your shopping basket before you commit to buy.
Hope this is helpful, thankyou for your feedback...

  99. Sarah, I received the prick and pounce kit a few days ago and FINALLY had an open evening to try it out. I finished the pattern that was sent with the kit. Thank you for a few completed lines to show how it is done. After pouncing, connecting the lines and a quick flick of the fabric I saw my results. The only thing I could say was "Wow". I cannot believe the detail and crisp lines that this technique achieves. I have to admit that I was a little intimidated to try prick and pounce but this is easier and more accurate than anything else that I have tried. The results are amazing. Thank you, Wendi

  103. Dear Sarah,
I've been following your beautiful work on stitchinfingers and have just now found your website. Have also just bought one of your pouncing kits online. What a find, especially for someone like me who likes embroidering on dark linen. It might not be the first one to go to Australia, but it will be one of the most appreciated.
Thank you for such an interesting website and for your informative newsletter, and I look forward to your book. Wish I were close enough to come to classes at the RSN. By the way, was amused to see a listing for'Rugby classes'. Now that's really multi-skilling, I thought.
